225
conversations about the subject were finished.
Then I convoked the two portuguese managers of
the sociedade to a private conversation, in result of
which they have protested to their partner, the Japanese
Mr. Cagava, against the intromission of r. Nonomura in
their business. Then Mr. Nonomura apologised.
Two days later the Portuguese man of war
"Gonçalves Zarco" arrived. Te had several feasts,
amusements and balls. Mr. Nonomure received always
invitation but he surely could notice the coldness towards
him from everybody, and at last sail to Makassar by Dutch
mail.
Since then, we have received several demonstrations
of good will from the part of the Japanese, including the
visit of "Hankuyo Maru”, training ship, whose officers
were very kind for the principal officials of the Colony.
I could not receive them owing to my illness.
These are the informations I can give you
according your request but I expect in brief (probably next
month) to go to Lisbon to recover my health and to meet
the Governors' Conference that is to be held in Lisbon
this year; then I shall have the opportunity to ask your
opinion about several subjects in relation with the position
of the British-Portuguese alliance in the Grient.
I send with this letter the information about
the present position of coffee trade with statistics of the
exports for the year 1938.
With kindest regards, I avail myself of this
opportunity to renew the assurance of my high consideration.
(Signed) ALVARO DA PINTOURA.
Governor of Timor.
